MEDICAL TECHNOLOGISTS HAVE THE ANSWERS LOOKING FOR A CAREER IN CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE?
A Medical Technologist is a highly trained clinical laboratory scientist who may be employed in hospitals, clinics, research facilities, industry, universities, biochemical companies, veterinary/zoos, public health, or other health related agencies. Through the sophisticated scientific tests they perform on blood, tissue, and body fluids they aide Pathologists an Physicians in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Technologists are asked to perform complex analyses and make important decisions that affect patient treatment. They must be able to see the interdependence of the test and to know the physiological conditions affecting test results.
To do this the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Medical Technologist) uses many sophisticated instruments and procedures to perform a variety of laboratory tests in the areas of clinical chemistry, blood banking, hematology, and microbiology for example. Computer knowledge has become an essential component as well. Because of their education, clinical laboratory scientists can establish and monitor quality control programs and write/update clinical procedures as needed. They are often promoted to supervisory positions and can go into education, sales, research, the military (officer), and even on to medical school.
Students interested in medical technology are encouraged to work, volunteer or observe in a clinical laboratory to see what medical technologist do.
